Q&A with Brockton RB Ahmik Watterson

HANOVER — One of the best showings from Sunday's MASS ELITE 7v7 Underclassmen Showcase came from Brockton running back Ahmik Watterson.

The junior, who transferred into Boxer country from Tennessee over the offseason, came on toward the end of the season, rushing for 672 yards and eight touchdowns on 82 carries (8.2 yards per rush).

At Sunday's event at the Starland Sportsplex, Watterson did well in both testing and drills. After measuring in with a height and weight of 5-9.5, 185 pounds, he clocked a 4.53-second hand-timed 40-yard dash. His 4.72 laser time would likely have been in the lower-4.6 range had he not veered slightly to the side toward the end of his run. Watterson also posted a 35-inch vertical, and 9-foot, 11-inch broad jump.

Watterson is also off to a strong season in indoor track, and posted a 55-meter dash time of 6.65 seconds at the beginning of the month.

We spoke to Watterson briefly after the event. Here is an edited version of that conversation.

MassVarsity: I know you came up from Tennessee over the summer. How many of these showcases and stuff did you go to down there, and how many have you been to up here?

Ahmik Watterson: I've been to one or two down there. This is my second one here. So, it's new.

MV: I saw that you went around a bit on that laser-timed 40, but you still got one of the best times here. Do you feel when you get to these things, is it hard to not get hung up on the numbers and just perform?

AW: Yes. It's very tough to get caught up in what you're doing and perform how you should, to the best of your ability.

MV: What was it like playing at Brockton this year? Obviously, it's a very tradition-laden school, a lot of good athletes. What was it like playing with them?

AW: It was fun. It was fun. We had a lot of good times. There were times when it could have been better than how it was going, and there was a lot of adversity. But we beat it, and just had fun doing it.

MV: What was it like that Thanksgiving Day game against Bridgewater-Raynham? You make a big catch down the sideline on the game-winning scoring drive.

AW: Yeah, it wasn't really nerve-wracking. It was just really cold, and it was hard to focus because we were all hurt from being hit everywhere, and it was, like, one degree outside. I just performed how I knew I could, and got ready and got it done.

MV: What are your goals for the rest of the spring and summer coming up? I know you're running track, too, and putting up some great times.

AW: Some of my goals are to get my 55 time a little, try and get a better 40 time, and try to work on a lot of technique, running technique, get faster and be able to outrun anything I need to, get better footwork.

MV: What schools have you heard from?

AW: I've heard a little bit from URI, and a little bit from BC. Not much. Other than that, I haven't really been talking to coaches like that. They just haven't reached out. I need to take (initiative) and reach out to them more.
